The Mersey Weaver Scout District came close to completing a clean sweep of the prizes at this year’s Cheshire Hike.
Almost 200 teams took part across three age categories in the annual event which tests a range of skills from navigation to teamwork.
Teams from Mersey Weaver District won both the Pathfinder and Explorer sections and were second in the Pathfinder Plus category.
The Pathfinder section is open to Scouts aged from 10-12 years who hike 30km over two days, Pathfinder Plus sees a slightly older age group from twelve and a half years old hiking 40km and carrying an 8kg rucksack, while the oldest section, the Explorers, is for teams up to 17 years of age who carry a rucksack up to10kgs in weight between 50 and 60km.
Over the course of the two days the competitors are marked on their route planning skills, how they set up at base camp at the end of the first day, and on a variety of challenges undertaken at checkpoints along the route.
1st Moore were the successful team in the Pathfinder section, while Explorers from the Aquila and Cestrian units took out the prize in the Explorer section. In Pathfinder Plus, the team from 1st Norley were just edged out into second place.
The Teams were presented with their Trophies by District Youth Lead Grace Wheeler and County Lead Volunteer Dave Hopley.
`These were fantastic results and we’re very proud not only of these teams, but also every one of our teams who took part in the event. It’s a real test of the skills the young people learn at their weekly meetings,’
Mersey Weaver Lead Volunteer – Oliver Chambers.
