The votes have been counted and the winners of the 2012 Scout Birthday Badges are revealed. This year, Steve Backshall, Frank Skinner and Miranda Hart are among the winners.
Every year we celebrate Scouting’s birthday by awarding Honorary Scout Activity Badges on 1 August. These badges are awarded for exceptional accomplishments and/or achievements by public figures who have done something particularly special.
This year’s shortlist included funnyman John Bishop, nominated for the Sports Enthusiast Badge, Michael McIntyre (Entertainer Badge) and Professor Brian Cox, nominated for the Astronomer Badge.
And the award goes to…
Scouts from all over the UK voted in this year’s awards and we were lucky enough to meet with some of the winners and present them with their special Scout Badge plaque.
Among this year’s winners, TV presenter and comedian, Frank Skinner, received the Swimming Badge for facing his fear of water and swimming for Sports Relief.
He commented on being a big fan of Scouting: ‘I think one of the first things you have to learn to do as a person is to get on with other people, and work as a team and be responsible, and all those things that make you, dare I say it, a better person. I think now I’m a dad I really think it’s massively important and serious, so…I would definitely sign my son up for it [Scouts].’
Russell T Davies, the man responsible for successfully rebooting Doctor Who for the 21st century, justifiably won Scouting’s Writer Badge, and commented on his victory, saying, ‘What an honour! I’m really thrilled and delighted, and I’d like to say thank you to everyone who voted for me. Anyone can become a writer, anyone at all, so I’d just like to encourage anyone reading this to get those ideas out of your head and on to the page. You’ll have so much fun. It’s the best job in the world!’
Rubbing shoulders with celebs
Our Scouts were even lucky enough to get a tour of Radio One when they presented Gemma Cairney with her Communicator Badge.
She had some great advice for anyone wanting to get into radio: ‘I’ve just said yes to doing all sorts of things that I’ve found really scary and that I didn’t know would be right, but I just gave it a go and learnt along the way. And listen to people as well! I really do believe you can learn something from nearly everybody you meet, even the bad eggs, because then you know you don’t want to be like them. So I think just don’t get insular and have fun!’
Beth Gooch, Ambassador and VIP Liaison Manager for The Scout Association, comments on this year’s awards: ‘We’ve had some great fun this year awarding these Birthday Badges. The thing that people have been really touched by is that they were voted for by the Movement.
‘Many of the winners this year are a real inspiration to young people, but a lot of them said they themselves were very inspired by what our thousands of volunteers achieve.’
